Ever been to the doctor? Then like it or not, you’ve contributed to the medical coding process.
Once you leave your doctor, he transcribes all the important details of that visit. That transcription is then coded by, you guessed it, a medical coder, who turns those details into a simple 3-7 digit code made up of letters and numbers.
For example, did you go in because you were bitten by a pig? Then one of the codes from your visit will likely be:
W55.41XA: Bitten by pig, initial encounter
